Installing and Using FA SYNC

Back to Previous Screen

Setup Program

  • Download the FA SYNC setup program that is compatible with your Mac OS X version.
You can save this ".zip" file to your Mac Desktop or any temporary folder.

Click here to Download the software

  • Double-click the "Zip" file you saved.  This will open the file (using Stuffit) and start the program.  There is no serial number or registration needed.
Note: if your Mac OS X version is not supported, please click the Download link again and choose the right version.

  • Once the program is installed, you will see an icon for FA SYNC on your desktop.

Running the Application

  • Double-click the FA SYNC icon on your desktop to launch the program.

  • FA SYNC is easy to use. The main screen that opens is where you define new synchronization jobs and view all defined jobs.

  • Terms to know...

    • Local Folders: folders on your Mac.

    • Remote Folders: folders on your FilesAnywhere account.

    • Source Folder: the folder containing the original files you want to copy FROM (a local folder)

    • Destination Folder: the folder which will receive the files (a folder in your FilesAnywhere account)

    • Sync Panel: the main application window

    • Options: screen where you setup the scheduling and advanced options

    • Sync Mode: just leave this on Auto for best performance.

    • FASYNC/Preferences: where you setup any required firewall rules and your stored FilesAnywhere username/password.

Define a New Synchronize Job

  • Click "NEW" to define a new job.

  • Drag-and-drop a local source folder on your Mac into the first box entitled "Drop a local folder here".  All folders and files inside that local source folder will be included automatically.
Note: if you need to backup more than one source folder, you can define multiple sync jobs to do that.

  • Click the button "Set Remote Destination"

  • In the popup window, enter your username and password.  Then click "Browse..."

Troubleshooting Errors: if there is an error, first retype your username and password for accuracy. Make sure they are all in lowercase letters.  If that still does not resolve the error, check your Internet Firewall settings - you may need to allow FTP (port 21) or SFTP (port 22) if you use a software firewall; or you might have to configure your network firewall to allow that kind of traffic.  Contact us for further troubleshooting if we can help: 1-866-805-1991 or support@filesanywhere.com

  • Select a remote folder on your FilesAnywhere account, or create one by clicking "New".   Once you have the folder selected for the destination, click "Set".

  • Click the "Options" button to adjust the automatic run schedule.  The schedule defaults to run the job at the current time, everyday.  Click "Set" when done.

  • Click "Save" to add the new job.  You will see the new job added to the list of currently defined jobs.  When you job is running, you will see a progress indicator.

Managing Jobs

  • Click "Sync Now" on a selected job anytime to run it.

  • You can close the program window at anytime.  You will be prompted to close the window completely, or hide the window.  Choose "Hide", or just minimize the program, if you want your jobs to continue running, or run at the next scheduled time.  If you close the program completely, or turn off your Mac, your scheduled jobs will not run.

  • To see the actual progress of your jobs, you can login to FilesAnywhere through your web browser and see the actual files and folders copied to your account.  Once on your account, your files can be securely accessed the same way, wherever you go!

  • To edit a job, select it from the list on the Sync Panel, make your changes in the top section, then "Save".

  • You can define jobs to synchronize Down from FilesAnywhere to your Mac, essentially Downloading your FilesAnywhere files to your Mac.  To set this up, define a new job and simply switch the Source and Destination folders in the instructions above.

  • Troubleshooting Errors: if there is an error, check to see if any files are being transferred.

    • If no files are getting transferred: there is a basic setting that needs to change: retype your username and password for accuracy. Make sure they are all in lowercase letters.  If that still does not resolve the error, check your Internet Firewall settings - you may need to allow FTP (port 21) or SFTP (port 22) if you use a software firewall; or you might have to configure your network firewall to allow that kind of traffic.

    • If the files don't seem to be updating correctly: confirm the source and destination folders, as well as the file dates.

    • If the backup stops after a while: check your connection to the Internet. Try restarting the computer. Sometimes the Internet connection may get interrupted, or we may have had a maintenance on the server connected.  FA SYNC will automatically recover from temporary interruptions.  Sustained interruptions will require a stopped job to be started again.  You can click "Sync Now" and the program will resume where it left off, or it will restart automatically at the next scheduled time.
